Norris secures victory in Hungarian Grand Prix

Norris Claims First 2026 Victory
Lando Norris secured his and McLaren’s initial Grand Prix victory of 2026 at the Hungarian Grand Prix. He finished ahead of Red Bull’s Max Verstappen and Mercedes’ Kimi Antonelli. The race featured mid-race drama and a late retirement for Norris’s teammate, Oscar Piastri.
Norris, who started from pole position, spent the first half of the race behind Piastri. Piastri had taken the lead at Turn 2 on the opening lap and maintained it despite Norris’s requests to pass. The dynamic of the intra-team battle shifted after the midway point when Piastri, following his second pit stop, made contact with a Williams car driven by Carlos Sainz.
This incident, combined with Norris’s strong pace in clear air before his own second stop, influenced the race’s outcome. Piastri’s race concluded with an apparent gearbox problem, leading to his retirement.
Race Incidents and Penalties
Piastri’s stoppage triggered a Virtual Safety Car (VSC), which led to further pit lane activity. Verstappen and Antonelli, who had recently changed tyres, remained on track to secure second and third positions, respectively. They finished ahead of the Ferrari duo, Lewis Hamilton and Charles Leclerc, who both made three pit stops.
Hamilton initially emerged from his final stop ahead of Antonelli but had to concede the position. Replays showed he had crossed the VSC white line at the end of the start/finish straight just behind the Mercedes. A five-second penalty for speeding in the pit lane further impacted Hamilton’s chances of a podium finish. Leclerc ultimately moved ahead of Hamilton for fourth place after the penalty was applied.
Isack Hadjar secured sixth place in the other Red Bull car, while George Russell finished seventh after a difficult start to the race. Russell dropped to 19th position due to the anti-stall system engaging at the start. Racing Bulls achieved another double points finish, with Liam Lawson and Arvid Lindblad placing eighth and 10th, respectively, around Audi’s Nico Hulkenberg. Hulkenberg’s teammate, Gabriel Bortoleto, finished 11th.
Aston Martin drivers Lance Stroll and Fernando Alonso, in their updated cars, finished 13th and 14th. They were positioned between the Alpines of Pierre Gasly and Franco Colapinto, and ahead of both Haas and Williams cars. Piastri watched the final 15 laps from the sidelines after his retirement. The Cadillacs of Valtteri Bottas, due to overheating brakes, and Sergio Perez, because of a front-left issue, also did not finish the race.

Qualifying and Early Race Dynamics
Norris secured pole position at the Hungaroring circuit by a margin of 0.012 seconds over Hamilton. Leclerc qualified third, and championship leader Antonelli was fourth. However, both Hamilton and Antonelli received three-place grid penalties from the stewards. The Ferrari driver was penalised for impeding Piastri, and the Mercedes driver for not slowing sufficiently under yellow flags.
These penalties meant Norris started from the front, followed by Leclerc, Piastri, and Verstappen. Hamilton was demoted to fifth, ahead of Russell, while Antonelli dropped to seventh. Perez started from the pit lane after making set-up changes.
Before the formation lap, Norris, Piastri, and Verstappen opted for medium starting tyres, while Leclerc and Hamilton chose soft tyres. Bortoleto, Alonso, Sainz, and Stroll also started on softs, with the rest of the field on mediums. At the start, Norris maintained his lead, and Piastri overtook Leclerc to follow his teammate into the first corner. Verstappen engaged in a close battle with the two Ferraris.
Piastri then moved into the lead by executing a cut-back move at Turn 2 after gaining on Norris. Hamilton also passed Leclerc for fourth and had contact with Verstappen. Russell experienced a poor start, falling from seventh to 19th due to his anti-stall system. As the race progressed, Piastri held a lead of just over a second over Norris, followed by Verstappen, Hamilton, Leclerc, Antonelli, Hadjar, Lawson, Lindblad, and Hulkenberg.

Russell began to recover, moving up to 11th by Lap 13, passing drivers from Williams, Haas, Alpine, and Aston Martin. Hamilton made the first front-running pit stop on Lap 14, switching to hard tyres and rejoining in ninth. Verstappen responded on Lap 15, also moving to hards from mediums, and then surprised Hamilton with a pass into Turn 1 at the start of the next lap. Piastri and Leclerc pitted on Lap 17, followed by Norris on the subsequent lap. Piastri narrowly maintained his lead over Norris at the pit exit.
Antonelli continued for a few more laps, with the McLaren pit wall suggesting he might attempt a one-stop strategy. However, his stop for hards on Lap 22 indicated a two-stop strategy. Piastri regained the lead but faced pressure from Norris. Verstappen gradually fell back into third, followed by Hamilton, Leclerc, and Antonelli. Russell climbed to seventh before pitting for hards on Lap 28. Bottas retired from the race on Lap 30 due to overheating brakes. Hamilton made his second stop on Lap 30 for another set of hards. On Lap 33, Piastri pitted for hards, giving Norris clear track ahead.
