India secures 3-0 T20I series sweep against Zimbabwe in Harare
India defeated Zimbabwe by 35 runs in the third and final T20I match, completing a 3-0 series sweep in Harare. The victory saw India maintain its position as the number one ranked T20I team and the reigning World Champions.
Zimbabwe, despite losing three wickets in the powerplay, managed to score at a brisk rate, reaching 53/3. Ben Curran and Dion Myers were key contributors during this period. Later, Ryan Burl and Wessly Madhevere formed a 60-run partnership to keep the chase alive. However, Madhevere’s dismissal made the target challenging for Burl, who remained unbeaten with 54 runs.
Bowling Performance and Key Wickets
India’s bowling attack played a crucial role in securing the win. Mayank Yadav opened the bowling with a wicket and concluded with a three-wicket haul, finishing with figures of 4-0-29-3. Yash Thakur also made an impact, taking two wickets in one over. Ravi Bishnoi delivered an economical spell, conceding 24 runs for one wicket from his four overs.
During Zimbabwe’s innings, Ravi Bishnoi bowled his second over, with Ryan Burl taking a quick single. Ben Curran was dismissed after attempting a reverse-sweep off a flatter delivery from Bishnoi, edging the ball to Mayank Yadav at short third man. Curran contributed 20 runs from 19 balls, including two boundaries. Following Curran’s departure, Wessly Madhevere came to the crease, scoring a single to deep mid-wicket after tapping one back to the bowler.
Other wickets for Zimbabwe included Brian Bennett, caught by Vaibhav Sooryavanshi off Mayank Yadav for 0 runs, and Dion Myers, caught by Shreyas Iyer off Yash Thakur for 19 runs. Sikandar Raza was caught and bowled by Yash Thakur for 0. Wessly Madhevere was caught by Tilak Varma off Mayank Yadav for 28, and Tadiwanashe Marumani was bowled by Ashok Sharma for 1. Brad Evans was caught by Rinku Singh off Mayank Yadav for 14 runs. Newman Nyamhuri remained not out with 1 run.
India’s Batting and Series Highlights
India posted a strong total, largely due to Vaibhav Sooryavanshi’s performance, who scored 81 runs off 49 balls. Ishan Kishan and Shreyas Iyer also made valuable contributions, while Rinku Singh added 25 runs off 14 balls towards the end of the innings. Blessing Muzarabani was a notable bowler for Zimbabwe, taking 1/33, while Brad Evans secured two wickets. Sikandar Raza and Wessly Madhevere each took one wicket.
Vaibhav Sooryavanshi was named the Player of the Series for his total of 151 runs across three games, achieving a strike rate of 196.10. He also received the Player of the Match award for his 81-run knock. Sooryavanshi attributed his success to good preparation and comfortable playing conditions in Zimbabwe, where he had previously played in the U19 World Cup. He highlighted the support from his coach and captain, and his strategy to play his natural T20 game to give the team a strong start.
Ravi Bishnoi reflected on his performance, noting that his hard work paid off and that the efforts of the coaches helped him improve in specific areas. He mentioned that the conditions in Zimbabwe, where the ball tends to skid and stay low, suited his bowling style, and the large grounds also benefited the bowlers.
Shreyas Iyer, India’s captain, expressed satisfaction with the comprehensive 3-0 victory. He highlighted the fearless approach of the young players and their energy and intent on the field as key takeaways from the series. Iyer noted that many of these young players have gained valuable experience through the IPL and have played numerous games. His focus as captain was to ensure player comfort and maximise their potential, while enjoying seeing individuals take responsibility and contribute to team victories. He also mentioned the importance of maintaining momentum and continuously raising performance standards.
Sikandar Raza, Zimbabwe’s captain, was honoured for becoming Zimbabwe’s most-capped player across all formats. He acknowledged Zimbabwe Cricket for hosting the series and emphasised the need for the team to play more matches against top sides. Raza pointed to the emergence of young players like Newman Nyamhuri as a positive outcome of the series, expressing hope that this cycle would lead to continued improvement for the team. He also acknowledged his own need to contribute more with the bat. Ryan Burl and Brian Bennett were presented with mementos for reaching the milestone of 2000 T20I runs for Zimbabwe.
Following this series, India will travel to Sri Lanka for a two-match Test series, with the first Test scheduled to begin on 15th August in Galle.
