India Reclaims Top T20I Ranking After Zimbabwe Series Win
India has returned to the top position in the ICC Men’s T20I Team rankings following an unassailable 2-0 lead in the series against Zimbabwe in Harare. The current ICC Men’s T20 World Cup champions have taken over the top spot from England, who had previously held it after a 4-0 T20I series victory at home.
The Indian batters took charge in the second T20I against Zimbabwe, after a dominating victory in the first T20I which was led by the bowlers and a record knock by Vaibhav Sooryavanshi. In the second match, after losing two early wickets, Ishan Kishan and Shreyas Iyer formed a 66-run partnership. Following this, Tilak Varma contributed a notable innings, scoring 60 runs off 29 balls.
Kishan, who was the highest scorer in the game with 81 runs off 44 balls, commented on the team’s approach. He noted that as a batter at number three, his role was to focus on the ball and play naturally, while also assessing the wicket conditions. He mentioned that he and Shreyas Iyer aimed to build a partnership and extend the innings, executing their plans effectively.
In pursuit of a target of 220 runs, Zimbabwe lost five wickets within the first nine overs and were eventually bowled out for 129, giving India an unassailable lead in the T20I series. The two teams are scheduled to play again.
Sooryavanshi’s Record-Breaking Feat
Vaibhav Sooryavanshi continued to set new records, becoming the first player in men’s international cricket to achieve multiple scores of 50 or more before turning 16. The left-handed opener accomplished this milestone during the third and final T20I against Zimbabwe in Harare, scoring 81 runs off 48 balls. His innings helped India reach a total of 192/5 after they chose to bat first.
Previously, only Nepal’s Kushal Malla had recorded a 50-plus score in men’s internationals before turning 16. Sooryavanshi has now surpassed this, with two such scores to his name. His scores of 50 or more before turning 16 in men’s internationals are two, while Kushal Malla has one.
Despite a pitch that offered assistance to bowlers, Sooryavanshi displayed a different aspect of his batting. He started cautiously, accumulating 11 runs from his first 10 balls and 26 from his first 20 deliveries, before reaching his second T20I fifty in 31 balls. His innings featured characteristic strokeplay, including a drive for four off a yorker from Brad Evans and a 102-metre six off off-spinner Sikandar Raza. He also executed a reverse-sweep for a boundary against Wesley Madhevere.
While Sooryavanshi found his rhythm, opening partner Abhishek Sharma experienced a continued period of low scores. Abhishek edged Blessing Muzarabani to wicketkeeper Tadi Marumani for two runs. His recent six innings have yielded 10, 16, 3, 1, 8, and 2 runs, dating back to the third T20I against England in Nottingham last month.
Sooryavanshi then established a 75-run partnership for the second wicket with Ishan Kishan, who scored 29 runs. He later shared a 50-run partnership with captain Shreyas Iyer, who contributed 27 runs. The young player appeared poised for a century before Wesley Madhevere dismissed him, with Brad Evans completing the catch at long-off to end his innings at 81 runs.
After the departures of Sooryavanshi and Shreyas, India‘s scoring rate could not be maintained. The middle order added only 47 runs in the final five overs, with Rinku Singh‘s 25 runs off 14 balls helping India approach the 200-run mark. India concluded their innings on 192/5, a total that could prove challenging on a surface that favored bowlers.
Squad Depth and Future Prospects
With the series already secured, India entered the final match with the objective of testing the depth of their squad and aiming for a clean sweep. The consecutive victories have helped overcome the disappointment of India‘s previous tour of Ireland and England, where they faced six consecutive defeats. Under new captain Shreyas Iyer, the team has shown an impressive response, rebuilding confidence and momentum for the upcoming international season.
The final match provided India with an opportunity for experimentation. Iyer had indicated that changes were likely after fast bowler Prince Yadav sustained a hamstring injury during his match-winning spell in the second T20I. Left-arm seamer Ashok Sharma is a strong candidate to replace him, and uncapped wicketkeeper-batter Prabhsimran Singh and all-rounder Suryansh Shedge could also be given opportunities.
A 3-0 series win would be another significant achievement for India. Beyond the result, the team management is keen to evaluate fringe players and enhance squad depth for future assignments. India‘s batting has gained momentum throughout the series, with Ishan Kishan regaining his form, Tilak Varma providing consistency in the middle order, and teenage opener Vaibhav Sooryavanshi continuing to impress with his fearless approach. Although Abhishek Sharma has had a lean period with the bat, his useful contributions with the ball have highlighted his all-round value.
Meanwhile, Zimbabwe is determined to avoid a whitewash. Brian Bennett has displayed glimpses of potential, but the hosts have struggled to match India‘s discipline and consistency.
