England’s Brendon McCullum steps down as Test coach, to focus on white-ball cricket

'We just weren't good enough' - McCullum apologises for failures in marquee series

McCullum’s tenure and the ‘Bazball’ approach

Brendon McCullum has stepped down from his role as England’s Test head coach after a four-year tenure. The decision follows England’s 1-4 loss in the Ashes series in Australia and a recent home series defeat to New Zealand. Despite this, McCullum will continue to lead England’s ODI and T20 teams, a move that former England captain Nasser Hussain believes is appropriate, suggesting that giving McCullum all coaching roles initially was a mistake given the modern cricket schedule.

McCullum, alongside captain Ben Stokes, took charge in June 2022 when England’s Test side faced a challenging period, having lost sixteen of their previous seventeen Tests. Their approach, dubbed ‘Bazball’, aimed to instill a fearless, attacking style of cricket, encouraging bold decisions and a focus on positive intent rather than defensive caution. This philosophy initially yielded immediate results, with England climbing to second in the ICC rankings and achieving a 55 per cent win rate, including twenty-seven wins in forty-nine Tests.

The ‘Bazball’ strategy saw early successes, particularly in home series. England secured a clean sweep against New Zealand in June 2022 and later defeated India at Birmingham. The team also whitewashed Pakistan and achieved a victory in New Zealand. By late 2023, the term ‘Bazball’ had even entered the Collins dictionary, reflecting its impact on the sport.

Challenges against elite opposition

However, the effectiveness of ‘Bazball’ began to face scrutiny when confronted with elite opposition. The 2023 Ashes series at home revealed the first vulnerabilities, as Australia’s pace attack challenged England’s aggressive style. Although England managed to fight back and draw the series 2-2, Australia retained the Urn, indicating that the approach was susceptible against top-tier pace bowling.

The tour of India in early 2024 marked a significant setback. After winning the first Test in Hyderabad, England lost the series 1-4. The aggressive batting approach, which had been successful in other contexts, was systematically dismantled by bowlers like Ravichandran Ashwin. This pattern continued during the tour of Pakistan in October, where England won the first Test at Rawalpindi but then struggled on spin-friendly pitches, losing subsequent matches by 152 runs and nine wickets.

The 2025 home series against India further highlighted these challenges. Despite preparing flat pitches, England was outplayed, and India drew the series 2-2, marking their best result in England since 2007. The final verdict on McCullum’s Test coaching tenure came during the pink ball Test in Australia, where England lost the series 1-4, with Australia retaining the Urn even without their full-strength pace attack. The numbers indicate that while ‘Bazball’ was exceptional against lower-ranked teams, it struggled significantly against India and Australia, winning four Tests and losing eleven combined against these two nations.

Looking ahead for England cricket

Nasser Hussain has suggested Andy Flower as a potential successor for the Test head coach role, citing Flower’s meticulous approach and his past success in taking England to the number one ranking. Hussain believes that the qualities Flower possesses, such as attention to detail, have been missing from England’s Test team in recent years.

While acknowledging the positive impact McCullum had on England’s Test side, transforming their approach and delivering memorable series wins, Hussain noted that the recent run of seven losses in the last nine Test matches made a coaching change unavoidable. McCullum’s coaching style is considered better suited for white-ball cricket, where England is currently ranked as the number one T20 team.

The England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) announced McCullum’s decision to step down on a Sunday.
