Liverpool: The Jeff Bezos factor - unpicking puzzle of Liverpool's potential investors

Potential Investment in Liverpool

Reports indicate that Jeff Bezos, founder of Amazon, has been approached regarding a potential investment in Liverpool Football Club. This development follows earlier news that a consortium led by British-Indian businessman Amit Bhatia expressed interest in acquiring a minority stake in the Premier League club. The consortium is reportedly seeking to purchase around a 30% stake.

Fenway Sports Group (FSG), Liverpool‘s current owners, confirmed Bhatia’s interest in exploring a “strategic minority investment.” Bhatia, who previously served as a director and co-owner of Queens Park Rangers for 18 years, relinquished his stake in the west London club recently, which appears to clear the path for his involvement with the Anfield club.

Bezos’s Previous Interest in Sports

Jeff Bezos, identified by Forbes as the fourth-richest person globally with an estimated net worth of $257bn, has not yet invested in sports. However, he has explored such opportunities in the past. In 2023, he was linked with a takeover of the NFL franchise Washington Commanders when the team was put up for sale. He also previously considered purchasing the Seattle Seahawks.

Despite these explorations, Bezos ultimately decided against submitting offers for either NFL franchise. Sources familiar with the current discussions suggest that any deal involving Bhatia’s consortium could see Bezos receive equity in Liverpool. Bezos stepped down as Amazon‘s chief executive in 2021 to become executive chairman, retaining an 8% ownership in the company.

Amazon, under Bezos‘s leadership, has diversified into entertainment, acquiring sports broadcasting rights for its streaming services. This includes live UK rights for 20 Premier League games each season for six seasons until the end of last year, as well as broadcasting the Champions League in several European countries and the NFL in the US.

FSG’s Financial Position and Club Valuation

Liverpool is currently in a strong financial position, reporting record revenues and ranking as the highest-placed Premier League club in the Deloitte Football Money League in February. This contrasts with FSG‘s previous sale of a minority stake to Dynasty Equity in 2023, which helped offset revenue losses during the pandemic and reduce debt from projects like the club’s training centre in Kirkby and the Anfield Road stand expansion.

The proposed deal with the Bhatia consortium is understood to value Liverpool at approximately £4.5bn, according to the Financial Times. This valuation is reported to be higher than that of Manchester United when Sir Jim Ratcliffe acquired a 25% stake in that club. FSG acquired Liverpool in 2010 for a reported sum.

The search for fresh investors continues, with Bhatia reportedly securing financial backing from his father-in-law, Indian steel magnate Lakshmi Mittal. FSG has overseen significant success since taking over, with Liverpool winning two Premier League titles, the Champions League, FA Cup, League Cup, Super Cup, and Club World Cup since 2019.

The prospect of new investors raises questions among supporters, particularly concerning the long-term future of FSG and potential new ideas for the club. Neil Atkinson, CEO of The Anfield Wrap, stated that questions “should be asked whenever anyone is interested in paying money for an involvement in any Premier League club.”

The club is currently navigating a period of change, including a new head coach, Andoni Iraola, and significant shifts at senior management levels, such as Michael Edwards stepping down as FSG‘s CEO of football. Liverpool sporting director Richard Hughes has also been linked with a move to Al Hilal in Saudi Arabia.
