A marketing expert has indicated that the Portuguese Football Federation (FPF) might lose significant revenue and global attention if it does not prepare for a future without its most prominent player.
While Ronaldo has not officially announced his retirement from international football, he stated during the 2026 FIFA World Cup that it would be his final appearance in that tournament. Portugal exited the World Cup in the last-16 stage after a defeat to Spain, which has led to increased discussion about the future of both the player and the national team.

Daniel Sá, executive director of the Portuguese Institute of Marketing Administration (IPAM), highlighted the significant branding challenge awaiting the FPF once Ronaldo steps away. Sá noted that, from a brand perspective, Ronaldo‘s influence is considerably greater than that of the entire Portuguese national team combined.
Sá believes that Ronaldo‘s impact extends beyond his on-field achievements. The Al Nassr forward has been the public face of Portuguese football for over two decades, attracting sponsorships, television viewership, and commercial partnerships. Sá described his eventual departure as a “tragedy” in terms of the media attention that would be lost, comparing it to falling down a high-speed escalator.
The marketing expert further explained that Ronaldo has been a key factor in the FPF‘s commercial success, responsible for securing numerous contracts and generating substantial income for more than 20 years. Sá urged the federation to develop a new identity before Ronaldo‘s retirement becomes official, emphasizing that the FPF cannot rely solely on one individual.
Ronaldo‘s influence is not limited to his playing career. With over one billion followers across various social media platforms, the five-time Ballon d’Or winner is considered one of the most influential sports figures globally. His extensive sponsorship deals, business ventures, and digital reach establish him as a powerful commercial asset in football.
Sá anticipates that Ronaldo‘s brand will continue to grow even after he stops playing. The FPF‘s chief marketing and commercial officer, João Medeiros Cardoso, acknowledged Ronaldo‘s unmatched commercial value. Cardoso stated that the federation would have been unwise not to build campaigns around Ronaldo, particularly during the 2026 World Cup in the United States, a significant commercial market.
Cardoso also pointed out that while younger players like Nuno Mendes, Vitinha, and Bruno Fernandes are expected to lead Portugal into a new era, replacing Ronaldo‘s cultural and commercial impact is nearly impossible. He compared Ronaldo and Messi to some of the most influential individuals in history.
Speculation on International Retirement
Speculation suggests that Cristiano Ronaldo may announce his retirement from international football in September. Reports indicate that the 41-year-old could conclude his international career after a UEFA Nations League match against Wales.
A Portuguese agent reportedly informed a Jordanian journalist that the match against Wales at the Jose Alvalade Stadium would mark Ronaldo‘s final appearance for Portugal. This speculation is amplified by the fact that the Jose Alvalade Stadium is where Ronaldo made his international debut in 2003.
