Trinidad: Kavem Hodge guides West Indies on rain-affected opening day against Pakistan
West Indies batsman Kavem Hodge scored an unbeaten 83 runs, helping his team reach 194/3 at stumps on the opening day of the first Test against Pakistan. The match, held at the Brian Lara Stadium in Trinidad, saw play significantly reduced due to rain and bad light, with only 67 overs bowled.
Hodge remained at the crease throughout the day, building a crucial 88-run unbroken partnership for the fourth wicket with Shai Hope, who was unbeaten on 39. This stand helped stabilize the innings after early breakthroughs by the Pakistan bowlers.
Early Challenges and Recovery
Pakistan‘s fast bowler Mohammad Abbas made an early impact, dismissing Brandon King for 12 in the ninth over, leaving West Indies at 13/1. Runs were slow in the initial session, as Pakistan‘s bowlers maintained control. After lunch, however, West Indies began to recover, with Hodge leading the charge despite the pitch becoming more challenging following the rain.

Hope provided steady support, facing 91 deliveries by the close of play.
Abbas was the standout bowler for Pakistan, finishing the day with figures of 2/44 from 19 overs. Left-arm spinner Usman Ali, making his Test debut at the age of 33, showed promising signs by extracting sharp turn from the surface.
Team Changes and Tributes

Before the start of play, players from both teams and match officials observed a minute’s silence in memory of West Indies legend Sir Garfield Sobers, who passed away earlier this month at the age of 89. West Indies players and match officials also wore black armbands as a mark of respect for the legendary all-rounder.
Head coach Daren Sammy expressed his desire for West Indies to build on their recent momentum. He highlighted the challenging fixtures against Australia, India, and New Zealand since he took charge. However, he believes the recent 1-0 home Test series victory over Sri Lanka provides a strong boost and a potential turning point for the team.
