India aims for turnaround in Zimbabwe after Ireland, England series losses
India’s Recent Challenges and Captain’s Outlook
Shreyas Iyer, captain of India’s T20I squad, is looking to guide his team to a positive outcome in the upcoming series against Zimbabwe, which is scheduled to commence on July 23. This follows a period marked by two consecutive series defeats for the Indian side. The team first experienced a 2-0 series loss to Ireland, which Iyer described as a “reality check.” Subsequently, they faced a challenging tour of England, where they were unable to secure a victory in a five-match series, losing 4-0 after the initial game was abandoned.
Despite these setbacks, Iyer expressed optimism, stating that the team gained valuable insights from the UK tour. He emphasized the importance of adaptability and awareness for the team moving forward. Iyer noted that the recent results have brought the team closer and fostered discussions about their collective approach, particularly for the series against Zimbabwe. He views the upcoming matches as a significant challenge, especially for several players who will be competing in Zimbabwe for the first time.
New Faces and Young Talent
The squad traveling to Zimbabwe features several new additions. Yash Thakur and Ashok Sharma have received their first call-ups for T20I matches. Additionally, wicketkeeper-batter Prabhsimran Singh is also part of the squad. Players like Vaibhav Sooryavanshi, Harsh Dubey, and Suryansh Shedge have recently joined the team in 2026, while Mayank Yadav returns after a period affected by injury, having last played for India in T20I matches in 2024.
Iyer, who will also be playing in Zimbabwe for the first time, intends to empower the younger players, encouraging them to play without the fear of failure. He believes that removing this fear allows players to perform at their best. His message to the squad is to concentrate on the present and to prioritize playing cohesive cricket as a unit, with individual performances naturally following.
Vaibhav Sooryavanshi’s Journey and Confidence
Vaibhav Sooryavanshi, a young batter, has acknowledged experiencing “several ups and downs” over the past four months. Despite these challenges, he remains confident and focused on contributing to the team in the Zimbabwe T20I series. Sooryavanshi made his international debut against England, becoming India’s youngest international cricketer at the time, surpassing a previous record.
He played in three matches during the England T20I series but was subsequently left out of the final game. This decision led to criticism from some former cricketers. Sooryavanshi reflected on the support he received during this period, which helped him regain focus. He noted that the coaches are providing necessary guidance and practice opportunities.
Sooryavanshi holds positive memories of playing in Harare, having been a key member of India’s U-19 World Cup-winning team. He scored 175 runs off 80 balls against England in the final at the same venue. He expressed excitement about returning to a ground where he achieved significant success and plans to apply the knowledge gained from his previous experience with the pitches and conditions in Harare to the upcoming matches.
He stated his intention to rely on his practice and playing style to make a meaningful contribution to the team. The T20I series against Zimbabwe is set to begin on July 23.
