BCCI to review India’s T20I performance after England tour concludes

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has announced a comprehensive review of the men’s T20I team following a challenging white-ball tour of the United Kingdom. BCCI secretary Devajit Saikia confirmed that the team’s performances would be scrutinised immediately after the ongoing England tour.
This decision comes after the reigning T20 World Cup champions experienced a significant nine-wicket defeat against England in Bristol, which secured an unassailable 3-0 lead for the hosts in the five-match series. Saikia, speaking from Edinburgh during the ICC Annual Conference, acknowledged that India is currently navigating a difficult period but expressed confidence in the board’s ability to identify and resolve the issues.
The review is scheduled to take place right after the ODI series in England concludes. Saikia stated that the Indian T20I team is experiencing a challenging phase, particularly in their matches against England and previously against Ireland. He emphasised the need for a thorough review once the series is over to understand the problems the team is facing and to work towards sorting them out.
Challenges in foreign conditions
India‘s white-ball campaign has faced difficulties in recent weeks. The team first suffered a 0-2 T20I series whitewash against Ireland before England secured the ongoing five-match series with their victory in Bristol. In the fourth T20I, India scored 158/7 after choosing to bat, with captain Shreyas Iyer‘s unbeaten 80 being a notable performance. England successfully chased the target, with captain Harry Brook scoring 79 not out and Phil Salt contributing 59 not out, forming an unbeaten partnership that sealed the win with more than six overs remaining.
Assistant coach Ryan ten Doeschate highlighted that a key challenge for the team is to address their performance in foreign conditions. He noted that the team needs to understand the process required for quick adaptation to different playing environments. Ten Doeschate stressed the importance of accepting that the team is underachieving away from home and that players need to mentally prepare for varied conditions, especially with future tournaments in mind.
The Indian batters have struggled with seam-friendly conditions in Ireland and England, particularly after playing on flatter pitches in India for much of the year. Ten Doeschate pointed out that quick adjustments are crucial for success on foreign pitches. He mentioned that bowlers like Jofra Archer and Josh Tongue bowled exceptionally well, and the team has not adapted as effectively as discussed.
He further elaborated that what works in India may not necessarily work elsewhere, and the team needs to shift its mindset from relying on strong performances on good wickets. The coach observed that the wickets in the series were slightly slower and had some bounce, requiring a different approach to batting. Despite efforts to address these issues, he acknowledged that the team’s performance has been poor.
Team composition and leadership
Ten Doeschate also noted that Shreyas Iyer has been the primary run-scorer on this tour, despite not being part of the T20 World Cup-winning squad. He expressed disappointment with the overall performance but emphasised the importance of learning from these games, trusting the players, and providing them with continued support given their past contributions to the country.
The assistant coach explained that a busy schedule in India meant the team did not have ideal preparation time for the tour. He highlighted the need for better preparation for different conditions and for players to be mentally ready to make necessary shifts more quickly. Ten Doeschate supported Shreyas Iyer‘s leadership, stating that he is leading by example with his batting.
He believes that Iyer needs time and support to excel as a captain, especially considering potential future decisions regarding leadership. Ten Doeschate also suggested that the return of key players like Jasprit Bumrah and Hardik Pandya would make a significant difference to the team. He stressed the importance of giving Shreyas time to grow into his role and for players to adapt to his captaincy style. The inconsequential fifth and final T20I between the two sides is scheduled to be played in Southampton on Saturday.
