Jadumani Singh secures quarter-final spot
Jadumani Singh Mandengbam of India delivered a strong performance at the 2026 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, securing a unanimous decision victory over Pakistan‘s Sumama Rehman. This win in the men’s 55kg boxing Round of 16 ensures his progression to the quarter-finals, maintaining India‘s medal aspirations in his category. The bout, held on Sunday, saw Jadumani achieve a 5-0 victory, demonstrating control throughout the contest.
This victory follows Jadumani‘s earlier success in the Round of 32, where he defeated Scotland‘s Aaron Cullen. His consistent performance at the Games builds on his previous achievement of winning a silver medal in the 50kg division at last year’s World Boxing Cup Finals in Noida. After moving up to the 55kg category this season, Jadumani has continued to display his speed and composure, positioning himself as a significant prospect for India.
The opening round of the contest against Rehman was closely fought, with both boxers exchanging punches. Rehman utilized his height and reach, while Jadumani countered with quick footwork and combinations. The judges narrowly favored Jadumani in the first round. However, the intensity increased in the second round, where Jadumani gained greater control and scored a knockdown against Rehman, shifting the momentum. He maintained this advantage to secure a unanimous decision from all five judges after three rounds.
Jadumani is now set to face England‘s Ellis Trowbridge in the quarter-finals on Tuesday. A victory in this upcoming match would guarantee him a place in the medal rounds, as Commonwealth Games boxing rules award bronze medals to both losing semi-finalists. He was also the first member of India‘s boxing contingent to compete at the Glasgow Games.
Preeti Panwar advances, Lovlina Borgohain guaranteed medal
In other boxing news from the Commonwealth Games, Preeti Panwar also made a strong impression, advancing to the women’s 54kg quarter-finals. The Asian Games bronze medallist secured a Referee Stop Contest (RSC) victory in the second round against Deborah Mtenje of Malawi on Sunday. Panwar, who also won a gold medal at the New Delhi World Cup last year, dominated her opponent, leading to the referee stopping the bout with 47 seconds remaining in the second round after Mtenje received two standing counts.
This win places Preeti one step closer to securing her first Commonwealth Games medal. She is scheduled to compete against Northern Ireland‘s Nicole Clyde in the quarter-finals on Tuesday. Clyde previously defeated Ghana‘s Nancy Bamfo by unanimous decision in her pre-quarter-final match. The two boxers have a history, having trained together as sparring partners in Belfast prior to the Games.
Lovlina Borgohain, an Olympic medallist, has already secured India‘s first confirmed boxing medal at the Games. Competing in the women’s 75kg division, Lovlina received a direct bye into the semi-finals, which automatically guarantees her at least a bronze medal under Commonwealth Games regulations. She is scheduled to compete in the semi-finals on July 31 against Tuvalu‘s Tarona Khanum Badi Pasoni Taafaki, with the gold medal bout at stake.

The Indian boxing contingent, consisting of 14 members with seven male and seven female boxers, continues to show strong performances in Glasgow. Sachin Siwach, a medal contender in the men’s 60kg division, also progressed from the Round of 32. He secured a 4-1 split decision victory over Canada‘s Keoma Al-Ahmadieh in a closely contested bout.
Siwach, who is 26 years old, will now face England‘s William Hewitt on Monday, with a spot in the quarter-finals on the line. With Jadumani in the quarter-finals, Lovlina assured of a medal, and Siwach continuing his campaign, India‘s boxers remain strong contenders across various weight categories as the competition progresses in Glasgow.
