Malaysia to host Bahrain Grand Prix in October 2026 at Sepang International Circuit
Formula 1 and the FIA have confirmed that Malaysia will host the Formula 1 Gulf Air Bahrain Grand Prix in October 2026. The event is scheduled to take place at the Sepang International Circuit from October 2-4, 2026, positioned between the Azerbaijan and Singapore Grands Prix. This arrangement allows Formula 1 to maintain a full schedule of 23 races for the 2026 season, as the Bahrain race was initially postponed earlier in the year.
The decision to move the Bahrain Grand Prix to Malaysia stems from the ongoing conflict in the Middle East, which led to the cancellation of the originally scheduled April races in Bahrain and Saudi Arabia. The Gulf state will continue to fund the event, which will retain its original title, the ‘Bahrain Grand Prix’, despite being held in Malaysia. This agreement is subject to final approvals, including that of the World Motor Sport Council, though this is largely considered a formality.

The Sepang International Circuit, located near Kuala Lumpur, is a familiar venue for Formula 1, having made its debut on the calendar in 1999 and last hosting a race in 2017. The circuit is recognised for its challenging layout, passionate fanbase, and often unpredictable weather conditions, which have historically contributed to exciting races.
Stefano Domenicali, President and CEO of Formula 1, expressed his satisfaction with the arrangement, highlighting the sport’s ability to adapt and find solutions. He also acknowledged the support from His Majesty King Hamad bin Isa Al Khalifa of Bahrain, His Royal Highness Prince Salman bin Hamad Al Khalifa, and His Majesty Sultan Ibrahim of Malaysia, along with their respective governments, for making this outcome possible.
FIA President Mohammed Ben Sulayem also commented on the collaboration, emphasising the tireless efforts of the FIA, Formula One Management, and their partners in Bahrain to explore all options. He reiterated that the safety and well-being of all involved, including teams, volunteers, officials, and fans, remained the highest priority throughout the process. Ben Sulayem noted Malaysia’s significant place in Formula 1 history and the strong relationship with the Motorsports Association of Malaysia.
International Cooperation and Future Outlook
His Royal Highness Prince Salman bin Hamad Al Khalifa, the Crown Prince and Prime Minister of Bahrain, underlined the close and brotherly relations between Bahrain and Malaysia as a key factor in facilitating this event. He stated that the race would offer a wonderful experience for fans globally and reflect Bahrain’s ongoing commitment to the sport, positioning the country as a pillar of stability for Formula 1 amidst regional challenges.
Malaysian Prime Minister Dato’ Seri Anwar Ibrahim conveyed his appreciation to Bahrain for their trust in Malaysia. He highlighted that hosting the Formula 1 Gulf Air Bahrain Grand Prix is more than just staging a world-class sporting event; it signifies the enduring friendship and partnership between the two nations. The Prime Minister also affirmed Malaysia’s readiness to showcase its infrastructure, operational excellence, and hospitality to the global Formula 1 community.
The addition of Malaysia to the 2026 schedule brings the current race count to 23. However, the ongoing conflict in the Middle East continues to raise questions about the final two rounds of the season, scheduled for Qatar (November 27-29) and Abu Dhabi (December 4-6). Formula 1 is reportedly considering alternative venues should these races be unable to proceed.
Potential alternative locations mentioned include Imola in Italy, Portimao in Portugal, and Istanbul Park in Turkey. While Imola is considered the most likely option if further changes are needed, Portimao and Istanbul Park are also under consideration, though they would require construction work to be completed before their official return to the calendar in 2027. The sport’s adaptability in securing the Malaysian event suggests a readiness to make further adjustments if required to ensure a full season.
