This journey involved crossing the desert barefoot and without water before reaching Melilla, a Spanish enclave in North Africa. Upon arrival, they were detained by the civil guard. A lawyer from the Catholic aid organisation Caritas advised them to claim asylum by stating they were from a country at war, leading them to tear up their Ghanaian papers and declare themselves from Liberia.

Iñaki, who plays international football for Ghana, has spoken about his parents’ sacrifices, noting that their children’s success is a testament to their arduous journey.
