Speculation mounts over Gambhir-Agarkar rift in Indian cricket team
Speculation has arisen regarding potential friction within the Indian cricket team management, specifically between head coach Gautam Gambhir and chief selector Ajit Agarkar. This comes amidst recent T20I series losses against Ireland and England, which have drawn scrutiny towards Gambhir’s coaching tenure. Former India wicketkeeper-batter and current commentator Dinesh Karthik highlighted a possible conflict between the two during a discussion on the Sky Sports Cricket Podcast.
Karthik suggested that Agarkar might be focused on long-term player development and exploring a wider pool of talent, while Gambhir, keen on securing immediate victories, aims to win every bilateral series. This difference in approach, according to Karthik, could be contributing to confusion in player selection. He pointed out that this situation is not ideal for the players, as it could lead to uncertainty within the squad, with individuals potentially feeling insecure about their place after a few underperforming games.
The discussion around player selection gained prominence following the treatment of Sanju Samson and Vaibhav Sooryavanshi during the recent UK tour. Sooryavanshi, a player who had a strong performance in the IPL season, was expected to make his debut in Ireland. However, Samson retained his spot in the playing XI. After Samson experienced three consecutive failures, Sooryavanshi was given an opportunity but also struggled to replicate his IPL form, scoring 42 runs in three outings. Consequently, Sooryavanshi was dropped for the fifth and final T20I against England, and Samson regained his place.
Former England captain and commentator Nasser Hussain also commented on the situation, suggesting that the management’s handling of Samson and Sooryavanshi might have negatively impacted their confidence. Instead, batting coach Sitanshu Kotak was observed speaking with Gambhir and Kohli separately after Kohli’s net session.
The report detailed that Kohli first participated in fielding drills before heading directly to the nets, where he batted for approximately 30-40 minutes. While Kohli was batting, Gambhir reportedly observed him from a distance. After Kohli finished his net session, Kotak engaged in a lengthy conversation with him. Furthermore, it was claimed that Kohli walked away with his kit bag, seemingly ignoring Gambhir, while Gambhir was conversing with other team members. This is not the first instance where claims of discord between Kohli and Gambhir have surfaced, with previous reports of statements made by Gambhir about Kohli before becoming head coach, and a notable clash during an IPL 2023 match between Lucknow and Bengaluru.
