Bublik secures semi-final spot

Alexander Bublik, the top seed at ATP Kitzbühel, has advanced to the semi-finals after defeating Alex Molcan. Bublik secured a straight-sets victory, winning 6-3, 6-2, in what marked his 400th tour-level match. This win places him in the semi-finals for the fifth time this season.

The Kazakh player is also the defending champion at the tournament. His progression to the semi-finals means he is pursuing the distinction of being the first title-holder to reach this stage in Kitzbühel since Robin Haase in 2013. This will be Bublik’s 27th career semi-final appearance.

The match between Etcheverry and Buse was the only quarter-final guaranteed to produce a seeded semi-finalist, as two other quarter-finals featured unseeded players against each other, and one had a seeded player facing an unseeded opponent.

In the bottom half of the draw, Yannick Hanfmann made history by becoming the oldest semi-finalist in Kitzbühel’s Open Era. Hanfmann, at 34 years and eight months, surpassed the previous record held by Paolo Lorenzi. He secured his spot by defeating Sebastian Baez 6-3, 6-1. This is Hanfmann’s 11th career ATP Tour semi-final and his fourth at this particular event.

Hanfmann will now compete against Quentin Halys for a place in the final. Halys reached his first semi-final of the season by defeating sixth seed Mariano Navone 7-5, 6-3. This victory also marked Halys’s first win against an Argentine opponent on tour, breaking a streak of six consecutive losses in such matchups. Earlier in the week, Halys had also eliminated second seed Valentin Vacherot.

Tournament developments and upcoming matches

The ATP Kitzbühel tournament has seen several notable developments in its quarter-final stage. The elimination of the second and third seeds, Valentin Vacherot and Arthur Rinkerknech respectively, has opened up the bottom half of the draw considerably. All four semi-finalists from the bottom half are unseeded, guaranteeing that at least one unseeded player will reach the final on Saturday.

Bublik, as the top seed, is one of three seeded players who reached the quarter-finals from the top half of the draw. His opponent, Molcan, had reached the semi-finals of ATP Umag the previous week. Molcan has a clay-court record of 24-7 this season.

The upcoming semi-final matches will determine who advances to the final. The match between Etcheverry and Buse was anticipated to be close, given their similar rankings and 2026 clay records. Baez, who was defeated by Hanfmann, was aiming for his 18th career semi-final. This was his second loss to Hanfmann at this venue, having also been defeated by the German player last year. Navone and Halys had both delivered strong performances in the Round of 16, winning their matches in straight sets. Navone notably defeated Jan-Lennard Struff, while Halys overcame Laslo Djere.
