Harare: Sooryavanshi’s record-breaking fifty powers India to victory over Zimbabwe
Sooryavanshi’s Impactful Performance
In the opening T20I against Zimbabwe in Harare, Vaibhav Sooryavanshi, a teenage batting prodigy, delivered a match-winning performance for India. The 15-year-old left-hander scored 50 runs off just 19 balls, achieving his maiden international half-century in only 18 deliveries. This explosive innings helped India successfully chase down a target of 126 runs in just 13.2 overs.
Sooryavanshi’s rapid half-century also established a new record, making him the youngest player in men’s international cricket to score a fifty. He surpassed the previous record held by Nepal’s Kushal Malla. His innings was crucial in securing a seven-wicket victory for India.
India’s captain, Shreyas Iyer, praised Sooryavanshi’s fearless approach to the game. Iyer noted the teenager’s confidence when on the field and his impressive way of approaching the innings. This performance marked a significant turnaround for Sooryavanshi, whose international career had started quietly during India’s recent tour of England, where he posted scores of 14, 13, and 15.
The Harare Sports Club proved to be a familiar and successful venue for Sooryavanshi. Earlier this year, he had scored 175 runs off 80 balls at the same ground during the Under-19 World Cup final. After taking a few deliveries to settle in, Sooryavanshi launched a counterattack, hitting four boundaries and four sixes, effectively dismantling Zimbabwe’s bowling attack.
His aggressive strokeplay largely ended the contest within the Powerplay. Sooryavanshi was eventually dismissed by Richard Ngarava one ball after reaching his half-century. Following his dismissal, Ishan Kishan contributed 35 runs, and captain Iyer remained unbeaten with 28 runs, comfortably completing the chase.
Captain Iyer’s Maiden Victory
The victory was also a notable personal milestone for Shreyas Iyer, as it marked his first win as India’s T20I captain. The 31-year-old had previously experienced a challenging start to his captaincy, having lost all seven of his preceding matches during tours of Ireland and England.
Iyer expressed his satisfaction with the team’s performance, commending both the bowlers and batters for their execution of the team’s strategies. He stated his happiness at securing his first win as captain. Iyer also explained his decision to bowl first after winning the toss, anticipating the bounce on the pitch.
The Indian bowlers set the tone early in the match. Mayank Yadav made an impactful return to international cricket, dismissing Brian Bennett with the very first ball of the match. Yadav finished with two wickets. Prince Yadav also claimed two scalps, contributing to Zimbabwe being restricted to 125 runs for seven wickets.
Mayank Yadav, who had undergone surgery last year for a stress fracture, consistently bowled at speeds exceeding 145 kmph. He targeted the back of a length area, hurrying the batters with his pace. His second wicket came when Dion Myers failed to time his pull shot in the fifth over. Debutant Ashok Sharma, despite conceding some boundaries in his initial over, managed to control the flow of runs in his subsequent overs.
Zimbabwe faced immediate pressure after Bennett’s first-ball dismissal and struggled to reach 26 runs for three wickets during the Powerplay. Captain Sikandar Raza attempted to score against Shivam Dube but was caught at deep square leg, leaving Zimbabwe at 32 runs for four wickets in the eighth over. Ryan Burl, Wessly Madhevere, and Tadiwanashe Marumani provided some resistance, helping their team surpass the 120-run mark. Ravi Bishnoi also contributed with economical figures of 24 runs for one wicket in his four overs.
